Destination: Wadi Rum

Essence of the trip:

Embark on an epic expedition through the unique lunar landscapes of Wadi Rum. A few days out in this desert and you’ll feel as though your on another planet. This expertly curated journey takes you through the “Valley of the Moon” and leads you to explore the dramatic desert wilderness of Southern Jordan.  The lunar like wilderness of Wadi Rum recently set the scene for epic Blockbuster and Oscar nominated film, The Martian, and on this expedition you’ll trek through the desert landscapes that helped the film come to life on the big screen. With our expert desert guides you’ll follow in the footsteps of the set scouts and actors of The Martian on this challenging desert trek that combines startling scenery with incredible history, is sure to push your limits to the test and open your eyes to this fascinating corner of the middle east.

This trip will give you:

  • A tremendous physical challenge as you take on an extended trek through the otherworldly moonscape of Wadi Rum, journeying through desolate ancient valleys enclosed by towering sandstone mountains.

  • The chance to explore an incredibly remote region of spectacular desert wilderness, taking in unique natural scenery and ancient history and following thousand year old Hajj camel caravan routes en route.

  • Genuine desert survival expertise, as you will learn how to cope within the desert’s unforgiving environment with instruction from local Bedouins, who have thrived within this setting for countless generations.

  • The opportunity to explore the iconic site of Petra with an expert guide that’s also appeared in countless films over the years. You’ll also visit the less well known, but equally majestic ancient ruins in the surrounding basin that few others have laid eyes on.

Having arrived into Amman and met your expert guides, you’ll be transferred straight into the desert to spend your first night sleeping in an original Bedu camp. Rising early the next morning, you will explore the world-famous ruins of Petra as the sun comes up, spending the rest of the day acclimatizing to local conditions as you visit a number of sites of unique historical and cultural significance, during a fascinating introduction to Jordan.

Post your cultural exploration, you’ll venture deep into the Wadi Rum valley to prepare for the physically intensive days ahead. The largest wadi in Jordan covering 720 square kilometers, Wadi Rum is known as the “Valley of the Moon” due to its barren, lunar-like landscape, which stretches out over a vast valley that is surrounded by huge granite and sandstone mountains that tower up to 1,700 meters above the desert.

Over the next 10 days you will complete an arduous trek through this unique setting, following in the footsteps of historic figures such as Lawrence of Arabia while tracing the ancient camel caravan routes of the Haji people, which date back for thousands of years. Travelling on camels and on foot, you’ll make your way out into the Khazali Canyon and then move south towards Wadi Saabet, taking in ancient Nabatean inscriptions en route, before journeying towards Mudawarra.

Continuing through the arid desert surroundings, over the next few days you’ll see the remains of the Hadjaz railway to Mecca, Suwan and ultimately reach Um Atleiha and Hidhun, where you will be able to see the Burdah rock bridge. Standing 35 metres high and regarded as one of the largest and most extraordinary natural rock arches in the world, this will provide another highlight of a truly epic desert wilderness adventure.
